The creation of the Canadian OpenStack Users Group

By Everett Toews, Senior Developer, Edmonton

I am pleased to announce that the Canadian OpenStack User Group is now ready to accept new users. Please join us!

Cybera has a long history with the OpenStack community, going back to its second design summit in November 2010. Ever since then, we could clearly see the potential of the OpenStack project. Developers and companies alike were rapidly mobilizing around it. Everyone saw the necessity of banding together to create a massively scalable cloud operating system. There was simply no way for any one organization to provide the resources required for a project of this magnitude.

The OpenStack project had a number of attributes that led us to pick it as our cloud operating system of choice:

  • Embracing the open source ethos
  • Organization and dedication of the people involved
  • Technical foundation
  • Documentation
  • And last but not least, the community

We had used software from open source projects before, but this was our first experience with truly diving into an open source community, and it has been very interesting to watch the community evolve. Developers and stakeholders relentlessly refine the processes and policies that help structure the community. It is an ongoing process of continuous improvement that will never be complete.

Cybera has done a couple of production deployments of OpenStack and we'€™ve learned a lot along the way. To give back to the community, we'€™ve openly shared that knowledge, and our contributions have taken many forms:

  • Blogging
  • Summit sessions
  • Speaking and presentations
  • Workshops
  • Answering questions on Launchpad
  • Participating in discussions on the dev mailing list
  • Bug reports
  • TODO: code and documentation!

Now, we would like to add the formation of the Canadian OpenStack User Group to that list. We want to help propel the adoption of OpenStack and cloud computing in Canada and feel that the time is right for a user group.

If you are from Canada and would like to learn more about OpenStack and Infrastructure as a Service, please join us by heading over to the Canadian OpenStack User Group.
