Celebrating Small Business Week

Small Business Week (October 16 – 22) is upon us —€” and it couldn't have come at a more exciting time. Alberta's business sector is humming, and the future continues to look bright as startup communities grow stronger and small businesses gain better access to tools and infrastructure to scale up or bring their new ideas to market faster.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper kicked off Small Business Week on October 16 with these words:

"€œOur Government is doing its share to support the efforts of small businesses to create jobs and growth in Canada. We are reducing red tape, keeping taxes low and have declared 2011 the Year of the Entrepreneur —€” highlighting the role entrepreneurs are playing in the success of our country. On behalf of Canadians, I thank small business owners and entrepreneurs for their continued efforts to keep the Canadian economy strong."€

There has been no shortage of inspiring business activity in Alberta over the last week. A few notable highlights include:

  • Cybera President and CEO Robin Winsor spent the day in Lethbridge on October 17 meeting with representatives from tecconnect, a new facility in Lethbridge designed to attract, incubate and develop technology companies.
  • Congratulations to Edmonton, which was recently ranked a top city for entrepreneurs.
  • Welcome to AcceleratorYYC, Calgary'€™s first entrepreneur-led co-work space, which officially opened its doors last week.

Happy Small Business Week to all of Alberta'€™s business innovators!
